The First Cup

After “Mama” lights the candles, “Papa” raises the First Cup—the “kiddush” cup or cup of sanctification—and gives a blessing. She notes that they (the Jewish people) have been sanctified—“set apart” for God’s purpose—by the commandments, and given times of joy and gladness in this memorial celebrating their deliverance from bondage in Egypt.

After “Papa’s” blessing, each person drinks from the first cup.
