The Yathutz and Four Questions
YATHUTZ (Breaking of the middle matzah). Unleavened bread, or matzah, is placed in a “matzah tosh”—a special bag with three pockets. The middle matzah is taken out and broken in half. One half is returned to the tosh, the other half—known as the afikomen—is wrapped in a white cloth and hidden by the “Papa” for the children to find later.
THE FOUR QUESTIONS. The youngest child has the honor of asking four specific questions, each addressing an important element of the Passover observance. This part of the Seder not only reinforces the meaning of that first Passover, but reminds parents to teach their children about the God who redeemed them.
