The First Passover/The Ordinance

God said, “When I see the blood, I will ‘pass over.’” In every household with blood on the doorposts and lintels, the firstborn son was spared. God considered the memorial of this deliverance and Israel’s redemption from bondage in Egypt of such importance that He commanded the Jewish people to commemorate this event forever.

As we celebrate Passover, we see how Jewish our Christian faith really is. It was during Jesus’ final Passover celebration that He instituted “The Lord’s Supper” or “communion.” This commemorative meal reminds us now, not only of deliverance from Egypt, but of our deliverance from sin by the shed blood of God’s Lamb, the Lord Jesus. Thus, the Passover meal and Christian communion are forever linked.
