Roasted Eggs and Bitter Herbs
The BYTZAH, or roasted egg, is a reminder of the daily animal sacrifices required by the Old Testament Jewish religious system. Because sin is a daily struggle, daily sacrifice was required. Animal sacrifices are no longer possible with the destruction of the Temple, and elimination of the Levitical priesthood.
Another section is filled with MAROR,“bitter herbs,” which is usually strong horseradish. Each family member dips a piece of matzah into the maror, and eats a generous portion, bringing tears to their eyes. This is a reminder of how bitter life was for the Jewish people in Egypt.
